Equipment

Ingredients

Italian-Style Patties

  • pound ground beef 80% lean
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 2 teaspoons onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • ½ teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Dash liquid smoke
  • Salt & pepper to taste

The Toppings

  • 4 tablespoons garlic & herb cheese
  • 1 large roma tomato diced
  • ¼ medium yellow onion diced
  • ½ teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
  • Sea salt to taste

The Buns

  • 2 brioche buns
  • Extra virgin olive-oil for drizzling
  • Balsamic vinegar for drizzling

Instructions

  • First, Prepare the bruschetta topping. Add roma tomato, yellow onion, minced garlic, olive oil, and sea salt to a medium bowl, then stir until well-combined. Set aside.
  • Next, prepare the Italian-style patties. Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix thoroughly until evenly combined. Form meat into two equal-sized balls, about 1/3 pound each. Flatten and shape burger patties until they are about 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch thick.
  • Preheat oven to 170 degrees. Place the brioche buns cut-side up on a baking sheet and toast for 10 minutes.
  • Then, cook the burgers. Preheat cast iron pan over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes. Transfer patties to the pan and cook for 4 to 5 minutes. Flip, then cook for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Once the brioche buns are toasted, remove from the oven and transfer to plates. Lightly drizzle olive oil and balsamic vinegar on the inside of the top buns, as shown in the recipe image above.
  • Check patties for doneness, then remove from heat and transfer to brioche buns.
  • Spread about 2 tablespoons garlic and herb cheese on each burger, then top with a spoonful or two of the bruschetta topping.
  • Serve with your favorite sides, a cold beer, and enjoy!

Notes

Garlic & herb cheese: Alouette spreadable cheese is one of our favorite things to snack on, so it was an obvious choice for this burger! If you can't find it at the store, we recommend using a similar spreadable cheese like boursin. The important thing here is to use a garlic & herb cheese for some Italian flavor.
Cooking the burgers: We use a cast iron grill pan to cook burgers on our stove. If you prefer grilling or have another method for cooking burgers that works best for you, feel free to ignore our instructions! Or check out our BBQ Burger Patty recipe for more details on cooking on cast iron versus in a skillet or on the grill.
Serving suggestions: We think a side of potato wedges and fresh tomatoes with mozzarella pearls goes great with this burger. But any lightly seasoned fries will complement this burger well, like these crispy rosemary fries from Alexia!
