Our BBQ pulled pork pizza uses leftover pulled pork and store-bought pizza dough for an easy homemade pizza night. The caramelized onions are the only real cooking involved and add an unbelievably good flavor to this classic combo that you won’t want to miss – besides, they’re super easy to make.
Add the butter and oil to the pan over low heat. Once the butter is melted, add the thinly sliced onion and stir to coat.
Cook for 45 to 60 minutes stirring occasionally. The onions will slowly turn a rich brown color.
Once the onions have reach your desired doneness (tasting is a great way to tell if they're how you like them!), add in the salt. Set the caramelized onions aside.
Making the Pizza
Preheat the oven to 500 degrees, or whatever temperature your dough calls for.
Combine the pork with ¼ cup of the BBQ sauce and mix to coat well.
Combine the shredded cheddar and shredded mozzarella together in a bowl, tossing to mix.
Assemble the pizza. Stretch the dough on a flour and oil coated baking sheet and then top with the remaining ½ BBQ sauce, cheese blend, pulled pork, and caramelized onions. Drizzle with extra BBQ sauce if desired.
Bake for 12 to 16 minutes (or again whatever your dough calls for as all pizza dough bakes differently). The crust should be crispy and golden brown and the cheese should be fully melted and slightly browned when done.
Notes
Baking pizza - It is best to follow the baking time and temperature provided by the dough you are using. Pizza doughs have a wide variety of baking directions because it really depends on the type and hydration of the dough. However, if your dough doesn’t have directions for some reason, then we like to default to baking pizza at 500 degrees F for 12 to 16 minutes. But keep an eye on it as it cooks. Start at 12 minutes and work your way up as needed.Use leftovers - This pizza is a great way to use leftover pulled pork and caramelized onions. With the caramelized onions already prepared, this recipe only takes about 20 to 25 minutes in total for a quick and easy dinner. Homemade pizza dough - We love making homemade pizza dough. So we completely get it if you wanna take this recipe to the next level with your favorite homemade dough. We recommend either making a larger, more robust dough to stand up to the amount of pulled pork and sauce we put on this pizza. For instance the al taglio dough from the Mastering Pizza cookbook would be awesome for this pizza.
