Butter chicken sandwich with raita.

We love our spicy butter chicken recipe so much, we couldn’t resist making a new fusion recipe inspired by it! This saucy butter chicken sandwich is the ultimate sub, complete with a side of sauce for dipping. It’s messy, it’s delicious, and it’s truly comfort food at its finest.

What This Recipe Entails

You can easily make this sandwich in less than 10 minutes if you use leftover butter chicken. Make some of our spicy butter chicken for dinner one night, and leave enough for sandwiches the next day. Or, you can use store-bought butter chicken or leftover takeout for an easy alternative to our homemade recipe.

  • Advanced prep time: 4.5 hours, if making butter chicken from scratch (4 hours to marinate the chicken, 25 to 30 minutes to cook)
  • Prep time: 5 to 10 minutes, to make the raita and toast the rolls

Otherwise, you’ll simply need to make raita (an Indian yogurt sauce) or use store-bought, and toast the sub rolls.

Butter Chicken Sandwich Ingredients

Overall, this is a very simple and easy to make sandwich once you have all the ingredients put together. However, you will need to make or procure some ingredients that your local grocer may not have. Don’t worry though, making everything from scratch is super easy!

Here’s what you’ll need to make butter chicken sandwiches:

  • Butter chicken
  • Raita (a yogurt based Indian dip or condiment)
  • Sub rolls

We recommend making a fresh batch of our butter chicken for this recipe. However, of course you can make your own favorite recipe, use store-bought butter chicken, or simply use takeout (leftovers work great)!

For the raita, you’ll need the following ingredients if you plan to make it from scratch. Otherwise you can check a local Indian grocery store, or an international grocery store, if you have either near you. And of course, it really does seem like Amazon has everything as you can get raita delivered to you.

  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Cucumber
  • Cilantro
  • Mint
  • Lemon juice
  • Garam masala
  • Cumin
  • Sea salt

The raita is used as a spread for this recipe. It provides a light and fresh component that helps to keep the sandwich from being too spicy or too heavy. Definitely don’t skip this ingredient!

How To Make A Butter Chicken Sandwich

Making a butter chicken sandwich is as simple as preparing butter chicken and raita, toasting sub rolls, and assembling:

  1. First, make the butter chicken if you haven’t got leftovers to use. If you do have leftovers, warm it up in a saucepan on the stove over medium-low heat (make sure to cover it) or in the microwave.
  2. Next, make the raita. Combine the Greek yogurt, diced cucumber, cilantro, mint, lemon juice, garam masala, cumin, and sea salt in a bowl and stir well to combine.
  3. Then, toast the sub rolls. Open them up and place them on a baking sheet, then broil on LOW for about 3 minutes until the insides of the rolls are golden brown.
  4. Finally, assemble the sandwiches. Spread the raita inside the sub rolls, then use a slotted spoon to add butter chicken to the sandwiches without too much sauce. Then, use a regular spoon to add extra sauce over the chicken.
  5. Fill a small bowl with butter chicken sauce, and serve on the side for dipping the sandwich into, au jus style.

A toasted sub roll works best for these butter chicken sandwiches since the chicken is super saucy. We also recommend using a slotted spoon to add the chicken into the rolls, so you can easily control the amount of sauce to your liking. Then, dip the sandwich into extra sauce before each bite!
