Product Overview

Souper Cubes are an innovative solution for freezing food in useful portions. Their freezer trays come in a variety of sizes including 2 cup, 1 cup, half cup, and tablespoon sizes. It’s like a giant, silicone ice cube tray for your food, which is so handy for reheating just the right amount when you need a quick lunch or dinner!

I’m a longtime fan of the brand – I first discovered them shortly after they launched their freezer trays on Shark Tank and quickly fell in love with the functional design of their products. Since then, they’ve launched a utensil set, ceramic baking dishes, and labeling supplies including tape and markers to keep your freezer stash organized.

Despite the name, Souper Cubes aren’t just for soup! While we do use ours regularly for soup, the one cup trays and two cup trays are also great for storing things like chili, curry, rice, and pasta. We also like to use the half cup trays for ingredients such as pizza sauce, pesto, chicken and vegetable broth, and buttermilk.

Product Review

Design

Souper Cubes have a robust, premium design. They feel and look high quality, and they deliver 100% on their promise of making it easier to freeze perfect portions. The silicone makes it easy to pop out frozen cubes for reheating – you just push up from the bottom and the cube slides right out.

The clear lids are also a nice touch, so you can easily see what’s inside, although they can frost over making it difficult to see the contents at times. But we always label ours anyways so we know what date we froze the food.

Versatility

We love that there’s a variety of sizes (we have all but the 2 tablespoon size) and that they all have the same footprint. This means they stack neatly in our freezer, keeping everything organized no matter what size portions we want to freeze.

The 2 cup tray is perfect for single serving sized cubes of soup, chili, or curry. We find the 1 cup size to work well for things like pasta sauce and meatballs, shredded chicken tinga, or freezing smaller portions of mac and cheese. The half cup might be our most-used Souper Cube – there are almost always two of them in our freezer, one with pizza sauce and another with leftover vegetable broth or buttermilk.

The fill lines on the inside of the cubes are also a nice touch. Food with high enough water content (like soups and sauces) expands as it freezes, so the lines help us make sure we’re not overfilling the tray.

Care and Cleaning

Souper Cubes are dishwasher safe, which makes them very easy to clean. We’ve run them through our dishwasher many times and they always come out spotless. We’ve never had a problem with staining or residual smells either, even after using them for things like chicken tikka masala and pizza sauce.

The only problem we’ve run into is when we used their water based paint marker to write on the lid, we didn’t scrub it off entirely before putting the lid in the dishwasher. When we took it out the marker was still visible and wouldn’t come off when we tried washing by hand. Our best guess is that the heat dry setting on our dishwasher might have set the paint. We prefer labeling our Souper Cubes with tape anyways though, so this wasn’t a big issue for us.

Alternative Uses

Souper Cubes are oven safe, but we haven’t tried baking in them yet. I’ve been looking forward to making mini loaves of banana bread in our cubes someday! I’ll be back with an update here when I get around to trying this out.

We’ve also seen people use these as on-the-go snack containers for the beach or the car. I do love the idea of this if you want to bring multiple snacks in just one container!

Our Take

Who Is This Right For?

Souper Cubes are great for home cooks that like to batch meal prep or often find themselves with extra ingredients that they don’t want to waste.

You can purchase individual Souper Cubes so that you can customize your set to the portion sizes that are helpful for you. If you’re only going to use them for batch meal prep, we recommend the 2 cup and 1 cup sizes. If you’re only going to use them for things like pizza sauce, chimichurri, and other ingredients, we recommend the 1 cup or half cup sizes.

Who Is This Not Right For?

If you don’t do any freezer meal prep or you don’t often find yourself with leftover ingredients to freeze, Souper Cubes likely won’t be that useful to you.

Sure, you can bake in them if you want to use them like a mini loaf pan – and they do make a fun container for taking snacks on the go – but that’s not their intended purpose, so you’d be better off buying something else better suited for your needs.

Pros And Cons

Pros:

  • High quality, sturdy design
  • Variety of portion sizes means they work for most foods you’d want to freeze
  • Stack neatly in the freezer
  • Easy to clean
  • Multiple uses (freezing, baking, snacks on the go)
  • Eco-friendly solution versus disposable plastic freezer bags

Cons:

  • They’re quite large, so when they’re not in use (which is rare for us) they take up a lot of space in our kitchen cabinets
  • Not as useful for freezing more solid foods like cookies, raw meat, or fruit (best for liquids)
  • More expensive than other solutions like freezer bags or plastic deli containers

Other Souper Cubes Products

As we mentioned, we have just about every product Souper Cubes currently offers. Here’s a quick overview of their other products and what we think about them.

Ceramic Baking Dishes

We like to use these ceramic baking dishes for defrosting, reheating, storing, and serving food. They’re sized to perfectly fit the frozen cubes, so you can easily pop out the portion you need and then reheat it in the ceramic dish in the oven or microwave.

They come with silicone covers so we also like to use them for storing food in the fridge. We’ll often use them as serving dishes for things like rice, potatoes, or veggies, and then just pop the lids on to store the leftovers in the fridge after dinner. We also use them for defrosting the frozen cubes overnight in the fridge if we don’t want to reheat straight from frozen.

  • Available in two sizes: 5×5 inch square (set of 2) and 5×3 inch rectangle (set of 4)
  • Square size fits 2 cup frozen cubes (or 2 of the 1 cup cubes), rectangle size fits 1 cup frozen cubes
  • Include silicone covers
  • Nesting design for easy storage
  • Oven, microwave, and broiler safe
  • Dishwasher safe for easy cleaning – although we’ve found that the silicone covers do better with hand washing

Utensils

Souper Cubes sells a ladle and a serving spoon that have an S-shaped handle so they hook onto the side of a pot. While this is kind of a neat feature, we don’t cook with super large stock pots so it doesn’t necessarily help us a whole lot – the utensils are large enough that they can sit right in our pots without sliding down into the food.

The serving spoon is particularly helpful for transferring things like sauces into our Souper Cubes for freezing. It has a shallow curve so that it’s easy to guide the food into the cubes, especially with the narrow openings on the half cup size.

We’ve had some issues with the silicone grip coming off of our utensils. It seems like they’re glued on, and the glue may have melted in our dishwasher. Overall, there’s nothing super special about these compared to other serving utensils, but if you cook with large stock pots the S-shaped handle is a nice touch.

  • Available options: ladle or serving spoon
  • S-shaped handle
  • Stainless steel with a silicone handle for easy gripping
  • Dishwasher safe

Labeling Supplies

Souper Cubes offers an easy tear kitchen tape and a water-based paint marker for labeling your freezer stash. We’ve tried both and prefer the kitchen tape over the marker.

The tape is easy to rip off without it splitting and it’s great for writing on with a Sharpie. Once you need to wash your Souper Cubes, the tape removes very easily, leaves little to no residue, and the lid comes out of the dishwasher good as new. It’s not too different from regular painter’s tape, but we find it’s a little easier to cleanly rip off a piece.

The paint marker can be a bit difficult to get working – you need to shake it a lot to activate the ink. And as we mentioned earlier, we put the lid in the dishwasher once without fully scrubbing off the marker, and now there’s residue that won’t seem to wash away.

Alternative Recommendations

There’s really nothing else out there like Souper Cubes. They’re the most effective solution for freezing mostly liquid-based foods in serving size portions, so they’re our number 1 pick for freezer meal prep.

If you don’t care as much about the portion sizes or you’re more likely to freeze more solid foods like raw meat, baked goods, and fruits or veggies, here are a few alternative options:

Stasher bags – We haven’t tried these yet, but friends of ours love their Stasher bags as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic bags. They come in a variety of sizes and are dishwasher safe.

Glass food storage containers – We have a few glass baking dishes that we like to use for freezer storage, including this 9×13 glass baking dish from OXO. They also sell small glass food storage containers that can go in the freezer, like these 4 cup round containers. We tend to prefer glass over plastic, since plastic can crack easily in the freezer.

Single use plastic freezer bags – This is our least favorite option because it generates more waste, but sometimes it’s just easy to use those trusty old Ziploc bags. We tend to use these for freezing raw meat and nothing else.
