Take your burger creations to the next level with this stuffed cheese burger. Why only put toppings on your burger when you can put them in your burger?

We love making fun and unique burger recipes! And being able to stuff burgers gives us a whole new style to play around with. This stuffed cheese burger is a fun twist on the classic. By putting sharp cheddar pub cheese inside the burger patty instead of on top, we were able to create a burger that explodes with cheese in every bite.

What This Recipes Entails

While stuffed burgers require a little extra work than the regular version, they are certainly fun to make and eat. And getting a great bite of melty cheese oozing out of a burger patty is an amazing experience.

  • Prep time: 15 minutes
  • Cook time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • Burger patty ingredients – This burger can’t be made with premade burger patties, so you’ll need everything to make your own. We use ground beef, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and liquid smoke (optional).
  • Pub cheese – We love using this sharp cheddar pub cheese from Président
  • Burger buns – For a classic burger experience we almost always opt for potato buns. But depending on what toppings you choose to go on your burger you can always switch things up with brioche, pretzel, or any other type.
  • Other toppings – This recipe is mainly to make a burger stuffed with cheese, so you can add on any toppings you’d like as if this were a regular cheeseburger. Here are some of our favorites: pickles, pickled peppers, ketchup, sriracha aioli, bacon, caramelized onions, avocado mash, or the classic lettuce, tomato, and onion.

How To Make A Cheese Stuffed Burger

  1. Make the patty meat – Combine the ground beef with the rest of the burger patty ingredients and mix well. Then split the burger meat into equally sized chunks. ⅓ pound burgers work well for stuffing.
  2. Prep the burger patty – Take each chunk and split it into two parts, the base (which should be about two thirds of the chunk) and the lid (which should be the remaining third).
  3. Stuff the burger – Using a burger stuffing tool like this one, add the base of the burger to the tool. Use the tool to create a cavity in the patty where you’ll add the cheese. Next, fill the cavity with the pub cheese. Lastly, flatten the burger lid and place it on top. Use the tool to press it all together, making sure the cheese is sealed in well.
  4. Prep other ingredients – If you are planning on having any toppings, now is a great time to get them ready to go.
  5. Grill – Grill the stuffed burger patty as you would any other burger.
  6. Assemble – Place your stuffed burger on the bun, top with any additions, and serve!

Recipe Variations

This recipe makes a pretty standard stuffed cheese burger using only pub cheese, but there are so many creative burgers you can make in this style. Here are some of our favorites:

  • BBQ Burger – Stuff the burger with cheddar cheese, then top with onion rings and BBQ sauce.
  • Jalapeno Popper Burger – Stuff the burger with cream cheese, diced jalapeno, and cheddar cheese. Top with some fried jalapeno wheels.
  • Garlic Aioli Burger – Make our garlic aioli burger but with a patty stuffed with some cheese, bacon bits, and caramelized onions.

Expert Tips

  • For visual learnersHere’s a great video on using a burger press to make a stuffed burger!
  • Burger press – Don’t make things harder on yourself, get a burger press that can be used for regular patties, sliders, AND STUFFED BURGERS! Disclaimer: Because the pub cheese used in this recipe isn’t solid, trying to make a stuffed burger without a burger press will be really hard and likely not turn out well.
  • Grill pan – If you (like us) don’t have the luxury of your own grill, get a cast iron grill pan. Bonus, you can grill indoors all year long this way!
