Enjoy this decadent brunch burger for a great start to the day. Featuring mashed avocado, fried egg, bacon, and hash browns for the perfect weekend brunch.

A brunch burger topped with all the breakfast fixings

In my opinion, the best true brunch food is a good breakfast style burger. Nothing else actually combines breakfast and lunch like a burger piled high with all your favorite breakfast foods. Pair that with a side of crispy fried potatoes and you have the cure to any late night out or a the perfect start to your weekend.

What This Recipe Entails

Preparing these brunch burgers is easy, however there are a lot of toppings to make. You can either save time by making them all at once, or make cooking easier by making them one at a time.

  • Prep time: 20 minutes
  • Cook time: 20 minutes

Alternatively, using store bought or leftover ingredients helps make this recipe easier. Instead of making your own burger patties or hash browns, you can buy pre-made toppings. You can also use leftover bacon or hash browns to save some time.

Brunch Burger Ingredients

We wanted to pile this brunch burger high with all our favorite breakfast and brunch foods. So we took everything from a classic egg, potato, and bacon breakfast, and threw it on top of a burger!

  • English muffin – The ultimate brunch burger bun.
  • Classic burger patty – Use your favorite burger patty recipe or buy them pre-made for an easier time.
  • Sliced cheddar cheese – Sharp cheddar is our go to, but you can use your favorite. You can go with American which melts well, pepper jack to add some spice, or even swiss to keep things interesting.
  • Avocado – Mashed avocado adds some much needed freshness to this salty, greasy burger.
  • Fried egg – Prepare the egg to your liking, if you’re all about the runny yolk life then keep it sunny side up, otherwise determine how set you want it.
  • Bacon – Because brunch isn’t complete without bacon.
  • Hash browns – We love making our hash browns from scratch because they are surprisingly easy and fun to make!
  • Chipotle mayo – Check out our chipotle mayo recipe for a quick, easy, and cheap alternative to store bought chipotle mayo.

How To Make A Brunch Burger

Just like any specialty burger, there’s no reason to get complicated here. Take your time prepping your toppings, and then assemble your burger! Here’s the steps we take to help make timing work out the best:

  1. Prep the hash browns – Fry grated potato in some oil until nice and crispy. Season with salt and pepper if desired.
  2. Cook the burgers – Grill the patties and top with cheese before they’re done for max meltiness.
  3. Toast the English muffins – While the burgers are cooking, toast the English muffins and fry your eggs.
  4. Assemble – Once all the components are ready, assemble the brunch burgers! Spread mashed avocado on the bottom half of each English muffin, place burger patties on top, then top each with a fried egg, 2 strips of bacon, a scoop of hash browns, and a drizzle of hot sauce or chipotle mayo if desired.

Heads up: This is a very involved meal. Unless you have a variety of leftovers, there are a lot of things to make. But that’s part of the fun here! As most of the ingredients and toppings are simple to make, the challenge comes from the number of things needed to be done. However this allows you to focus on enjoying the process. No critical thinking. No hard decisions. Just simple fun cooking.

Serving Suggestions

All good burgers deserve a good side. However since this is a brunch burger, you may be looking for something a little different than the traditional fries or onion rings. Here are some more fitting sides for brunch:

No matter how you serve it, this brunch burger will be the hit of the morning. Of course, you are free to enjoy this specialty burger at any time of the day. Give this recipe a try and let us know what you think in the comments below!

Expert Tips

  • For the perfect hash browns, grate your potato, don’t cut it! Fun, fast, and effective!
  • Mashing the avocado and spreading it on the bottom bun helps to keep everything from getting too messy. Put it on top of the patty with everything else, and it’ll quickly all slide off.
  • Extra toasty english muffins stand up better against the juicy burgers that we make.
  • If you don’t like eggs with runny yolks, smash the yolk when you are frying it to ensure everything is fully cooked.
  • A chipotle mayo or hot sauce isn’t necessary, but some heat or smokiness really adds a fun pop to this burger.

  • Chipotle mayo or hot sauce (optional)

Hash Browns

  • ½ tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

Top with English muffin tops and serve with a cold beer, a side, and enjoy!

Notes

Classic Burger Patties: This is our favorite recipe for homemade burgers. Get the recipe here or use your favorite burger patties – store-bought, frozen, whatever!
Frying the hash browns: It’s tempting to stir the potatoes around a lot as they cook, but try to resist! Let them sit for minutes at a time until they get nice and crispy, then stir them and break them up a bit to make sure they crisp evenly. (This is also a great time to fry up the bacon if you don’t have it ready ahead of time).
Optional toppings: I topped my burger with hot sauce, and Nicole used chipotle mayo. But this is a brunch burger, so if you like ketchup and eggs go for it! Or whatever other condiment your heart desires. Customization is one of the best things about burgers!

This burger is really fun to make. There are so many different toppings so it takes a little while, but I enjoy making each part and watching it all come together.
