A delicious healthy homemade garlic parmesan popcorn seasoning recipe made with olive oil, garlic, parmesan, red pepper flakes, and herbs. This seasoning blend adds some flavor and spice to a healthy whole grain snack!
We recently bought ourselves this microwave popcorn popper and it has seriously changed our lives. Popcorn is one of those snacks that’s actually quite nutritious, but still somehow feels like a guilty pleasure. So being able to indulge in it more often – in a healthier way, thanks to our popcorn maker – has given us an easy snacking alternative to chips or pretzels.
Popcorn can definitely still be a guilty pleasure if you douse it in loads of butter. So for a healthy, nutritious snack, we opted for a jug of 100% whole grain purple popcorn. Sometimes the prepackaged microwave popcorn is super buttery or super salty, or has fake colorings and preservatives we don’t want to put in our bodies.
You may be thinking, how can plain whole grain popcorn be as delicious as salty, movie-theater-butter popcorn?
Our answer: create custom seasoning blends, toss our whole grain popcorn with olive oil, and dust it with flavor!
Popcorn is the perfect vehicle for spices. It’s almost more delicious than plain buttery popcorn, because you can get so many different flavors in every bite. You can experiment with whatever seasonings you like, and it’ll be super tasty any way you dust it!
Our Garlic Parmesan Herb Seasoning was inspired by the dipping oils served at Italian restaurants. It’s a blend of garlic, grated parmesan, Italian herbs, and crushed red pepper flakes. The amount used in our recipe below gives the popcorn just a light dusting of flavor, with a little bit of spice from the red pepper flakes. If you want more flavor, we suggest scaling the seasoning blend by 1.5x or 2x, but holding back a little on the crushed red pepper if you don’t want it to get too spicy.

Garlic Parmesan Popcorn
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons purple popcorn whole grain
- 1 teaspoon parmesan cheese grated
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- ⅛ teaspoon dried basil
- ⅛ teaspoon dried oregano
- ¼ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- Pinch ground thyme
- Pinch sea salt
- Pinch black pepper
- 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
Instructions
- Pop purple popcorn in the microwave for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds (or until popping slows to more than 2 seconds between pops).
- Combine grated parmesan, garlic powder, basil, oregano, red pepper flakes, thyme, sea salt, and black pepper in a small bowl.
- Toss popped popcorn in olive oil, then sprinkle with seasoning blend. Toss to combine and enjoy!
