Let us introduce you to one of our newest sweet treats: maple butter. This delicious spread goes great with all of our favorite carbs, and we love adding the little bit of decadence to a rainy morning or when we need an afternoon pick-me-up.

Maple syrup butter and some fresh homemade bread is one of the best things to ever come from this blog – seriously. Give it a try and you’ll want to have this spread in your fridge all the time, too!

What This Recipe Entails

If you have softened butter and maple syrup on hand, you basically have maple butter. All that’s left is mixing them together!

  • Soften time: 30 to 60 minutes
  • Prep time: 5 minutes

The most important part of this recipe is using a maple syrup that you like. You want to make sure to use a real maple syrup as it provides all the flavor for your spread.

If you haven’t ever had the chance to do a maple syrup tasting, we highly recommend it. That way, you get to know the different types of maple syrup and which kinds you like best! Here is a nice starter guide to maple syrup grades to help you out.

How To Make Maple Butter

Let’s start with the basics: there are two ingredients you’ll need to make maple butter:

  • A good maple syrup
  • A stick of butter

Using real maple syrup is important so you get a good flavor to your butter. High quality maple syrup is unlike anything else. Honestly, we could drink it straight in small quantities… But that’s besides the point.

What we want you to avoid is using something like Log Cabin or Pearl Milling Company and ending up with sugar butter. Since neither of these brands actually have any maple in them, they’re just plain ol’ syrup, aka liquid sugar!

And while you’re at it, go make some buttermilk protein pancakes or waffles and enjoy them with the rest of that real maple syrup you bought. It’s a game-changer.

To make maple butter, all you have to do is mix the two ingredients together:

  1. The first step is to take your butter out of the fridge and let it get to room temp. You want it to be super soft so that it’s easy to mix the maple syrup in and end up with a smooth consistency. This will take about 30 to 60 minutes.
  2. Once the butter is at room temp, add the butter and maple syrup to a bowl and mix well to combine.
  3. Enjoy immediately on some freshly baked bread, toast, or pancakes, or store in the fridge for up to 1 month.

Easy and simple. If you forget to let your butter get to room temp, you can always microwave it briefly (10 to 15 seconds should do the trick) to speed up the process. Just be careful because you don’t want liquid butter!

You can even just set the butter on the counter near your oven if you’re baking something, and the residual heat should help it soften quicker.

Types of maple syrup: The most important part of this recipe is using a maple syrup that you like. You want to make sure to use a real maple syrup as it provides all the flavor for your spread, not something ultra-processed and sugary (that doesn’t even contain real maple!) like Log Cabin or Pearl Milling Co.

For softening butter, you can do what we do here in Florida: leave it out on the counter most of the time. I did note, however, that butter left on the counter during our recent stay in New Hampshire was nearly as hard as butter put in our refrigerator back home. Did I mention that most of the year coconut oil is liquid here?
