If you’re looking for a healthy and easy breakfast recipe, you’re in the right place! We love making these refreshing acai bowls when we’re craving something extra nutritious to start our day.

What This Recipe Entails

You can whip up a tropical acai bowl for breakfast in no time! You’ll need about 10 minutes to prepare your fresh fruit topping, and about 5 to 10 minutes to blend the smoothie (depending on how powerful your blender is).

  • Prep time: 15 to 20 minutes

Ingredients

This healthy smoothie bowl is made with a tropical blend of frozen fruits and acai, then topped with fresh fruit, granola, and coconut shreds for refreshing flavor!

  • Almond milk – Our acai bowl recipe is dairy free. Feel free to substitute with oat milk or other non-dairy milk!
  • Frozen acai – You can buy these in small packets in the freezer section of your grocery store (usually with the frozen fruit). We like to use the Sambazon brand ones.
  • Frozen fruit – A tropical blend of strawberries, pineapple, and mango
  • Peanut butter – We like to add this for a bit of extra creaminess and added protein. Feel free to skip it if you prefer, or substitute with other nut butters like almond or cashew.
  • Fresh fruit – Essential toppings for any acai smoothie bowl! We like to use mango, strawberry, and banana, but feel free to experiment with your favorite tropical fruits.
  • Granola – We love using KIND oats and honey granola with toasted coconut. The flavors play so well with the tropical fruits and shredded coconut! Plus, KIND granola is one of the healthiest options since it’s made with whole grains and natural sweeteners.
  • Other toppings – We like to add shredded coconut for extra tropical flavor. But you can also add things like chocolate chips, honey, and chia seeds to your acai bowl.

How To Make A Tropical Acai Bowl

All you need to make a tropical acai bowl is a powerful blender. We love our new Ninja Foodi Power Blender for tough jobs like smoothie bowls, especially since it comes with a smoothie maker attachment.

  1. Blend. Add all of the smoothie bowl ingredients to the blender. Blend on the smoothie setting, or on medium speed, until smooth. You may need to smash and stir often with a tamper or a large spoon if your blender isn’t super powerful.
  2. Serve. Transfer the smoothie to a bowl for serving and top with fresh fruit, granola, and shredded coconut.

That’s it! Just 2 steps and you’ll have a delicious and healthy breakfast ready in just a few minutes.

Serving Suggestions

Try this tropical acai bowl as a pre-beach breakfast, post-workout meal, or weekend treat! It’s so easy to make, and it’s nutritious, satisfying, and flavorful. The kind of breakfast that will leave you feeling full all day long, in the best way possible.

Expert Tips

  • Use a powerful blender like the Ninja Foodi Power Blender, or a blender with a built in tamper
  • If your blender isn’t super powerful, use a tamper or a large spoon to mash and stir the smoothie at regular intervals. Blend until it seems stuck, then turn off the blender, mash/stir, and blend again. Repeat as needed.
  • Adding a little more almond milk can help the smoothie blend more easily, but be careful not to add too much. Too much milk will dilute the flavor and result in a thinner consistency.

FAQs

Does the fruit have to be frozen to make an acai bowl?

Yes! Frozen fruit yields the thick, creamy consistency you want in an acai bowl. Fresh fruit becomes too thin when you blend it due to its high liquid content.

What’s the difference between a smoothie bowl and an acai bowl?

Smoothie bowls and acai bowls are both cold, creamy smoothies served in bowl form. But an acai bowl uses acai berry for added nutrition (acai is high in antioxidants, fiber, and healthy fats).

How to thicken an acai bowl?

Use frozen fruit instead of fresh for a thick acai bowl. You can also add a tablespoon or two of peanut butter or other nut butters to add thickness.

Notes

Frozen acai: You can typically find frozen acai packets at the grocery store, near the frozen fruit. We like to use the Sambazon brand ones.
Granola: We love using KIND oats and honey granola with toasted coconut for this tropical acai bowl. The flavors play so well with the tropical fruits and shredded coconut! Plus, KIND granola is one of the healthiest options for granola since it’s made with whole grains and natural sweeteners.
Peanut butter: Adding a little peanut butter to these smoothie bowls gives them some extra protein and helps create a thicker consistency. You can skip this ingredient if you want, or substitute with other nut butters, but note that the smoothie may end up a little thinner.
Blending: We recommend using a powerful blender to make acai bowls. If you need to, use a tamper or a large spoon to help break up some of the frozen fruit, alternating between mashing and blending until you’ve achieved the right consistency. You can also add a splash or two more of almond milk if needed, but note that too much milk will thin it out.

  1. 5 stars
This tropical Acai bowl is like enjoying an ice cream Sunday for breakfast, or maybe it’s a little more like froyo is a better comparison. Either way, the cold, fruity, slightly frozen base with some fresh fruit for a topping feels like it should be unhealthy but very much isn’t!
