This zesty avocado cilantro lime crema instantly brightens up any dish with its citrusy flavor and creamy texture.
Is there anything more delicious than creamy avocado, fresh cilantro, and zesty lime juice, especially in the summer? We can’t think of a better combination of flavors to spice up a burrito bowl or tacos with. That’s why we’re sharing our recipe for avocado cilantro lime crema this week as we head into June!
What This Recipe Entails
With just a couple ingredients and 5 minutes of your time, you can have a fresh, citrusy condiment to serve with tacos, bowl, chips, and many other of your favorite recipes.
- Prep time: 5 minutes
If you don’t like cilantro, you can easily make this recipe without it. And if you are looking for a healthier alternative to sour cream, try using plain greek yogurt instead!
What Is Avocado Cilantro Lime Crema Made Of?
The ingredients in avocado cilantro lime crema are pretty much all in the name: avocado, cilantro, and lime! You’ll also need sour cream and a pinch of sea salt. If you want a slightly healthier alternative, or don’t like sour cream, you can substitute greek yogurt straight up for sour cream. We like using 5% fat Fage as the texture is almost identical.
Crema is traditionally a tangy, slightly thinner variation of sour cream used in Mexican cuisine. So to make a simple crema at home, you can thin out sour cream with some lime juice and season it with salt. From there, you can easily add ingredients like ripe avocado and fresh cilantro for extra flavor and creaminess! All it takes is finding the right proportions to land the best flavor and texture.
The best avocado lime crema is both citrusy and creamy – but these two things have a give and take! More lime juice will give you that punchy lime flavor while resulting in a thinner crema. Less lime juice will result in a thicker crema that tastes more like avocado, cilantro, and sour cream. Play with the amount of lime juice, taste test as you go, and see what combination of flavor and texture you prefer.
One important thing to note, however, is that fresh lime juice makes a world of a difference in this recipe. Yes, squeezing fresh limes can be annoying, but it’s totally worth it – we promise!
Side note: If you don’t like cilantro (we have some friends who say it tastes like soap), you can easily omit it from this recipe! This crema is just as delicious with only avocado and lime.
How Do You Make Avocado Cilantro Lime Crema?
It’s really easy to make your own avocado cilantro lime crema! All you need is a blender and a good jar for storing the crema in the refrigerator. Trust us, you’re going to want this stuff on hand all the time.
Here’s how to make our avocado cilantro lime crema recipe:
- Slice a ripe avocado in half, remove the pit, and scoop the flesh into a blender
- Chop up some fresh cilantro and add it to the blender
- Add sour cream, lime juice, and a pinch of sea salt
- Blend until smooth, adding more lime juice as needed until the consistency is nice and creamy
Then transfer the crema to a serving dish or jar and stick it in the fridge until you need it. You can eat it right away, but we like to refrigerate it for at least 10 minutes or so before using it so it’s cold.
What Does Avocado Lime Crema Go With?
This flavorful crema goes with a ton of different meals. You can use it to dress up a plain chicken and rice, drizzle it over your favorite Mexican dishes, or scoop it with tortilla chips.
Here are some of our favorite recipes featuring avocado crema:
- Carne Asada Tacos
- Carne Asada with Rice & Beans
- Healthy Avocado Cilantro Lime Chicken & Rice
- Mini Vegetarian Bean & Cheese Enchiladas
It’s so versatile that we don’t know if we should call it a sauce, dip, spread, dressing, or snack – because it’s all of these at the same time! We also love drizzling this crema over burrito bowls, salads, and nachos. It’s just so creamy and adds an extra punch of citrus that instantly brightens any dish.
Avocado Lime Crema Without Cilantro
We know that cilantro is a controversial ingredient, so in case you are one of the unlucky ones who think it tastes like soap, we want you to be able to enjoy this delicious condiment as well.
Thankfully, making an avocado lime crema without cilantro is as easy as just leaving the cilantro out! This makes the lime come through stronger, so we recommend adding the lime a little at a time and tasting as you go. It is much easier to add more lime than it is to take it out.
We recommend starting with the juice of 1 lime, and then adding in more juice half a lime at a time until it gets to your desired taste. This sauce is meant to be very lime forward as the acid helps bring out the flavor in whatever you top with this crema.
No matter how you make it though, it’s hard to go wrong with avocado, lime, and sour cream.
Try the recipe below and we promise you’ll want to use this crema on everything from now on, too!
