A burger with tomato, mozzarella, and avocado.

Burgers are probably the food most of us think of when dreaming of summer cookouts. So we wanted to share with you one of our favorite summer-time burgers that is just as easy as a classic cheeseburger, but highlights some of our favorite warm weather flavors. Our avocado mozzarella burger features gooey fresh mozz, mashed avocado, and juicy tomato.

We have so many different burgers we love to make for guests, but many of them are too much work for a full cookout. That’s why we developed this recipe. An easy to prep cheeseburger that doesn’t take any extra work on your part and can be assembled by your guests.

What This Recipe Entails

Making this burger is a breeze, just make it like any other cheeseburger but add in a little extra time to melt the fresh mozzarella. Mash some avocado, slice the tomato, and assemble. While we love complicated burger recipes at times, we find there’s no need to go crazy to make a fun and delicious burger.

  • Prep time: 5 minutes
  • Cook time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • Burger bun – Our go to burger buns for any regular-ish burgers are potato buns. We just love the super soft, fluffy texture and think the flavor is superior to classic buns. But use whatever buns float your boat.
  • Burger patties – We like making our own burger patties at home, and if you don’t have your go to recipe already, check out our classic burger patties!
  • Fresh mozzarella – This is definitely a recipe that needs fresh mozzarella. This burger tastes best when all the toppings are super fresh.
  • Avocado – When picking out a ripe avocado, look for one that gives slightly underneath your fingers when you squeeze it and has a dark green skin. Bonus tip: If you find your avocados are underripe, stick them in a bag with some bananas, they’ll ripen much faster!
  • Vine tomato – A ripe tomato will be shiny with a smooth and uniform skin. A good, juicy tomato is one of my favorite pieces of produce and brings so much flavor to this recipe.

How To Make Our Avocado Mozzarella Burger

  1. Prep – Slice the mozzarella, slice the vine tomato, and mash the avocado – set aside.
  2. Grill – Grill the burger patties to your preferred doneness (use a meat thermometer to check the temperature! Cooking by temperature is much more accurate than cooking by time). Top with mozzarella after flipping the burger patty since mozzarella takes a couple minutes longer than a thin slice of American or cheddar cheese to melt.
  3. Assemble – Spread the mashed avocado on the bottom halves of the burger buns, then put cooked patties on top. Finally top each burger with a slice of tomato.
  4. Serve – Enjoy with your favorite side and a cold beer!

While we always enjoy a hearty burger that probably has too many toppings every once in a while (like our pulled pork burger or our spicy burger), sometimes a lighter, fresher burger hits the spot. We find this avocado mozzarella burger is especially perfect for an easy lunch or daytime cookout. Give it a try and let us know what you think by rating, commenting, and sharing below.

Expert Tips

  • Melting the mozzarella: Since fresh mozzarella comes in thick slices, get it on the patty earlier than you normally would for a regular cheese burger. Since we normally cook on a cast iron grill pan, I put the mozzarella on as soon as I flip the burgers. When grilling, I don’t need to do it that early, but I give it about 2 or 3 minutes longer than I would for classic burger cheeses like American or cheddar.
  • Messy avocado: While the presentation of sliced avocado might look nicer than mashed avocado, it makes for a much messier burger (not that we’re any strangers to messy burgers!) We recommend instead mashing the avocado and putting it on the bottom bun under the patties for the easiest and cleanest meal.
  • Enhance the avocado: If you want the avocado to stand out a little more, make what we call “fake guac”. When mashing the avocado simply add a little salt and lime juice. The salt and acid wil both brighten and enhance the flavor of the avocado for the perfect burger topping!
  • Fresh ingredients: With all the toppings being fresh ingredients, it’s important to make sure they’re high quality and ripe. Pick out your favorite mozzarella, a bright red, juicy tomato, and a soft, dark green avocado.
