Applesauce.

Applesauce is better when it’s homemade. And thankfully, homemade cinnamon applesauce is a breeze to make!

One of my favorite fall activities is going apple picking, and then getting to make some of our favorite fall treats with freshly picked apples. Homemade applesauce is right at the top of that list. Not only because it tastes so delicious, but also because it fills our kitchen with the cozy aroma of the fall season.

What This Recipe Entails

Making homemade applesauce requires some hands-on work, but it’s really easy to make. Almost all of the time and effort comes from peeling and coring the apples, and then mashing them once they’re cooked.

  • Prep time: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on what kitchen gadgets you have
  • Cook time: 20 minutes

If you have an apple corer/peeler such as this one, prep time is super quick and easy. Otherwise you’ll have to do it the old fashioned way. As for ingredients, any of your favorite apples will do. We love using a variety of tart and sweet apples that we pick from the local farm. Honeycrisp, Fuji, and Granny Smith are some of our favorites.

How To Make Homemade Cinnamon Applesauce

Making homemade cinnamon applesauce is super easy. Basically all of the work comes from prepping the apples. We recommend getting yourself an apple corer/peeler to make this easier and quicker. Otherwise you’ll have to peel and core by hand.

Either way, here’s how to make cinnamon applesauce:

  1. First, peel and core your apples.
  2. Next, add the apples, water, sugar, and cinnamon to a pot with a lid.
  3. Then, cover the pot and cook over medium low heat for 20 minutes, or until the apples are soft and mash easily.
  4. Mash thoroughly and let cool.
  5. Store in the fridge in an airtight container for up to a week.

While you can enjoy applesauce immediately after cooking, it’ll still be hot. So we recommend letting it cool on the counter for about 30 minutes before putting it in the fridge. Then you can cool it all the way down and enjoy it whenever you want!

Homemade Applesauce Variations

As we mentioned earlier, applesauce can be made as simply as simmering apples in water and then mashing. But applesauce can also be made in many different variations of flavor.

Here are some other ideas for homemade applesauce variations:

  • Use brown sugar instead of regular sugar in this recipe for a slightly sweeter flavor.
  • Replace the sugar and cinnamon with a little bit of maple syrup for a maple applesauce.
  • In addition to cinnamon, add nutmeg and allspice for a more potent fall flavor.
  • Remove the cinnamon for a classic applesauce made with your favorite apples.
  • Add a little bit of fruit preserves or fresh fruit for an extra flavorful applesauce. Blueberries and strawberries work great for this!

Next time you go apple picking, don’t be afraid to pick to your heart’s content. Any excess of apples you have can easily be made into some delicious homemade applesauce!
