This tequila forward Mexican martini is the perfect change up to a classic margarita for Taco Tuesday.

A Mexican martini with lime garnish.

This recipe is our take on a Mexican martini (no, not the Texas-style margarita with olive brine), but a twist on a true martini made with tequila and mezcal. We do add a splash of both triple sec and lime juice, so you might get a hint of margarita, but this cocktail drinks like a tequila forward martini.

The bright citrus flavors come alive around our agave forward cocktail. And with 3 parts tequila to 1 part mezcal, you won’t be overwhelmed by the smoke, but the depth of flavor makes a more complex and sophisticated drink.

Ingredients

  • Tequila – While there are a lot of good tequilas, and we always love trying new ones, we always go back to Plata Silver Hornitos for our mixed drinks.
  • Mezcal – A little bit of mezcal adds a unique and interesting twist to our Mexican martini thanks to the smokiness. Our recommendation for a starter mezcal is Del Maguey Vida Clasico
  • Lime juice – Fresh is always best, but bottled is okay here too.
  • Triple secDeKuyper is cheap and works well here. But feel free to swap it out for a better orange liqueur.
  • Dry vermouth – If you don’t already have a vermouth you like, we recommend starting with a Martini & Rossi Extra Dry. There’s a reason the name is so well known.
  • Lemon bittersFee Brothers makes great lemon bitters that are the perfect addition to any martini (any many other cocktails).

How To Make A Mexican Martini

  1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake until chilled, about 10 to 15 seconds.
  3. Strain with a hawthorne or fine mesh strainer into a martini glass. Better yet, double strain it for an extra smooth finish.
  4. Garnish and serve. A lime wheel or a spiral of lime peel are both fun garnishes for this cocktail.

We love enjoying this Mexican martini year round. It’s bright and citrusy enough for a refreshing summer cocktail by the pool, but smokey and strong enough to be slowly sipped in the winter as well.

Whether you choose to crush some martinis by the pool, or sip them slowly by the fire, you can’t go wrong enjoying this agave forward cocktail with some of our favorite Mexican appetizers like our crockpot street corn dip, easy bean dip, or black bean corn salsa

Ingredient suggestions: Plata Silver Hornitos is our go-to tequila for mixed drinks! If you’re new to mezcal, we recommend starting with something like Del Maguey Vida Clasico. And if you don’t already have a vermouth you like, we recommend starting with Martini & Rossi Extra Dry.

In general I don’t really like martinis because I find them to be too vodka or gin forward. But I love this Mexican martini since I’m a big fan of both mezcal and tequila, so featuring the flavor of both here is really awesome. And the vermouth keeps it feeling like a martini instead of straying into margarita territory. Definitely a great slow sipper I’ll make often.
