This spicy jalapeno burger with creamy chipotle mayo is a delicious alternative to a classic cheeseburger that’s just as easy to make!
We’re all about creative, out of the box burger ideas. But sometimes we just want a good ol’ cheeseburger made with high quality ingredients and a little something special. Turns out, this spicy jalapeno burger is exactly that!
Slathered with a creamy, spicy chipotle mayo and served on a toasted English muffin, this jalapeno burger tastes like you threw a cheeseburger into an inferno. It has the same basic elements, but everything is spicy. And it doesn’t require any extra effort.
Sounds awesome, right?
What This Recipe Entails
To make our spicy jalapeno burger, you’ll simply grill the burgers, toast the English muffins, and slice jalapeno to go on top. You can also make your own chipotle mayo with our recipe, which only takes a few minutes.
- Prep time: 5 to 10 minutes
- Cook time: approximately 10 minutes
Prep time will take a bit longer if you decide to make your own burger patties. Make sure to account for that when you’re planning to cook these burgers.
Spicy Burger Ingredients
You only need 5 ingredients to make our spicy jalapeno burger recipe:
- Burger patties
- Jalapeno
- Pepper jack cheese
- English muffins
- Chipotle mayo
You can use your favorite burger patty recipe for this spicy burger, try our classic hamburger patty recipe here, or buy them from the store. If you’re using premade burger patties from the grocery store, we recommend rubbing them with some garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper before cooking them.
Pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo add extra layers of spice to this burger, along with fresh jalapenos! Try our chipotle mayo recipe here for an easy homemade option, or use your favorite store bought brand.
We love serving burgers on English muffins from time to time. This jalapeno burger really lends itself to a crunchy toasted English muffin. It provides the perfect burger to bun ratio, and a much needed crunchy texture in contrast to the gooey, cheesy patty.
How To Make A Spicy Jalapeno Burger
This spicy jalapeno burger recipe is super simple. You’re basically making a cheeseburger, but adding jalapeno slices when you top the patties with the cheese! All in all, you can make this dinner in under 30 minutes, even if you choose to make your own burger patties and chipotle mayo from scratch.
Here’s how to make our spicy burger with jalapenos:
- First, preheat the grill or a cast iron grill pan over medium high heat. Once it’s hot, cook the burgers according to your preferred method. Immediately after flipping the burgers, add the jalapeno slices and then add the pepper jack cheese on top so it has plenty of time to melt.
- In the meantime, lightly toast the English muffins.
- Finally, transfer the cooked patties to the English muffins once they’ve reached the desired temperature. Top with a generous spoonful of chipotle mayo and serve immediately.
Jalapeno slices tend to slide around when you put them on top of the cheese. That’s why we recommend nestling them underneath the cheese – almost like they’re covered in a cheese blanket! The cheese traps them so that they stay on the burger while you’re eating it, instead of sliding off and making a mess.
If you want to cook these burgers in cast iron on the stove, they’ll take about 6 to 8 minutes. This is a perfectly good method for grilling burgers inside, especially if you have a small apartment (like we do) and no easy access to a grill.
Jalapeno Burger Serving Suggestions
There are so many sides that go well with a spicy jalapeno burger! Here are some of our favorites:
- Seasoned french fries or tater tots
- 3-ingredient beer battered onion rings
- Tortilla chips and salsa
- Caesar salad or garden salad
- Grilled corn on the cob
- Smashed potatoes
Pro tip: Make extra chipotle mayo so you can dip your fries, tots, or onion rings into it!
You can shake things up depending on if you’re serving it for lunch (we’d go with chips and salsa), an easy weeknight dinner (fries or tots) or a summer barbecue on the patio (corn, salad, and smashed potatoes, anyone?).
And don’t forget to wash this burger down with a refreshing brew! (If you want a spicy beer to go with your spicy burger, I recently tried this award-winning hatch chile beer at a brewery in Scottsdale – and it was obvious why everyone loves it).
