Chocolate peanut butter acai bowls make me think of sunshine and the ocean, especially since having one just like this in Hawaii! I love being able to make them myself and bring those tropical vibes to me, no matter where I am.

Key Ingredients

Ingredients for making high protein acai bowls: frozen acai, frozen strawberries, bananas, almond milk, peanut butter, chocolate protein powder, fresh strawberries, granola, and dark chocolate chips.
  • Acai – We always have Sambazon acai packets in our freezer. They’re by far the best and easiest way to make acai bowls at home. They taste better than the powder, and they add an extra frozen component which makes the texture of the bowl better. And they can be found in almost any grocery store.
  • Frozen strawberries – To get a thick and creamy smoothie bowl base, you must use frozen fruit. This recipe will not work with fresh strawberries, as they lack the frozen ice crystals that create a slushy texture when frozen fruit is blended. However, we do recommend using fresh strawberries as a topping!
  • Chocolate protein powderOptimum Nutrition Gold Standard chocolate protein powder can’t be beat. I originally chose this brand because it scores well in third party lab testing, tastes great, and is a good budget balance for me. I’ve stuck with it because it’s never let me down.
  • Toppings – We highly recommend topping these bowls with granola, fresh strawberries and banana slices, and dark chocolate chips. Other optional toppings we love are a little drizzle of honey or toasted coconut flakes.

Expert Tips

  • Using frozen acai packets – You may need to slightly defrost the acai to get it out of its packaging. We like to run it under lukewarm water for about 15 to 30 seconds until it’s just soft enough to slide out of the plastic, but no more than that so as to keep the smoothie bowl as cold as possible.
  • Keep it thick – The best acai bowls are thick and frozen. So the goal is to add as little liquid as possible when blending – just enough that the bowl actually blends, but no more. This will ensure that you have a properly textured acai bowl.
  • Don’t skimp on toppings – This recipe makes a lot of acai bowl mixture, so make sure you have toppings to go with it all! In our opinion, the more toppings, the more fun.
  • Eat it right away – There’s no way around this one. Acai bowls melt. So make sure to enjoy your delicious breakfast right away for the best experience.
  • Blenders – Blenders vary a lot in performance. We have the Ninja foodie power blender and it easily handles the frozen fruit. It has these bowls fully blended in about 30 to 40 seconds! We used to have a cheap Oster blender that could barely make these bowls. So if your blender is having trouble, you’ll either need more patience or more almond milk. If you love making acai bowls, we highly recommend investing in a high quality blender.

Acai Bowl FAQs

Yes! Protein powder easily blends into the acai bowl along with the rest of the ingredients. We love adding chocolate protein powder into this recipe.

This recipe contains about 39 grams of protein per bowl!

If you don’t want to use protein powder, but still want a chocolatey flavor, you can add cocoa powder instead. While we haven’t yet tried this substitute, a tablespoon or two should do the trick. As always, adjust to your taste!

And if you aren’t looking for chocolatey flavor, this recipe can be made perfectly well without the protein powder at all. Or, check out our tropical acai bowl for a recipe that doesn’t use protein powder at all.
